When you refer to this as a particular version, it's the singing style you're after, right? Because the arrangement is the Larry arrangement, perhaps a little slower than usual. I've listened a lot to the Vienna version from a couple of days later. I really love the late 90s style in general. Never though about it as a parallel to 1978, though, but I see what you mean.
Yes, his way of singing. I was in Lubiana ‘99 and Nurberg ‘78 : and it immediately hit me to be hearing for the first time after 31 years the same amazing unusual way of singing Tangled up in blue. Like a dirge song
Interesting. That has been one of the best side-effects of this particular project: to get a fresh look, chronologically, at all those trends and versions that — when listened to as the tapes drop in, tend to sound quite similar. Only in hindsight can one get sight of the development and the uniquenesses — like you did with the 1978—1999 experience.
Continue to fulfill your great work of study! I, myself, consider Paul the best writer about Bob performances, and was lucky enough to meet him and be friends
I'll make it simpler: gimmie the original studio album release, and a great late 70's Garcia band rendition, the rest sorta bores me. But I'm glad you enjoy your cool work!
Exactly! And there is more to come! Even though my favourite NET period is 1988–1995, there are certain things that make the later years more interesting. Stay tuned for the next (and last!) part.
You did not mention a particular version he used to play in april ‘99: particularly in Lubiana. So reminiscent of the ‘78 style of singing the song

And please, if you have it or find it, put here the Lubiana version

Nice read, thanks! It would be interesting to know if the performance varied on the few ocasions as the setlist opener (last time Chicago 2004)?
...you fail to see the genius in Garcia that zimmerman understood and acknowledged! For shame!

To each his own; I've always worked hard (and failed) NOT to be bored by Garcia. So I'll have to say: nope, too simple.
Lovely, great fun with all this music fragment. The same old song, but never the same...😇
